  • Evaluating a Competency-Based Supervision Approach for Motivational Interviewing

    Motivational interviewing (MI) is a well-known, evidence-based, brief counseling approach for substance use disorders (SUDs) that combines person-centered principles with strategies for enhancing motivation for change (Miller & Rollnick, 2012). Counselors using MI help their clients talk themselves into change by exploring and developing their motivations for change and lessening and resolving their arguments against it.


Kenneth  Perlmutter

Kenneth Perlmutter, PhD, licensed family systems psychologist, brings twenty-six years of experience working with complex psychological and behavioral health disorders. In 2008 he founded The Family Recovery Institute to train clinicians to take their work to the highest levels of efficacy, skills, and results. He guides family programming and offers family workshops and team building events to an ever-expanding network of treatment centers and behavioral health clinics. He was recently named credential chair and board member of the International Association of Family Addiction Professionals. As clinical director for the Mind Therapy Clinic in Corte Madera and San Francisco he leads a multidisciplinary team treating individuals and families at PHP, IOP, and outpatient levels of care. Dr. Perlmutter has served on the graduate faculty for San Francisco State University’s Counseling Department and is associate professor of chemical dependency studies at Cal State East Bay.
