We’ve spent the last few columns talking about the differences between “medical” care and other types of care for those with substance use disorders. I’ve received a greater number of letters than usual, all of which agreed with the fundamental point that patients appreciate a medical approach to their illness just as they would if they had diabetes.

Addiction Doesn’t Discriminate

Last year was a time when many public figures sought help from treatment centers to deal with personal problems they blamed on too much drinking or drugging. They were members of Congress, such as Mark Foley, Patrick Kennedy and Bob Ney. The actor Mel Gibson got help, as did Miss USA’s Tara Connor. Country music star Keith Urban checked into a treatment program, and so did many professional baseball, football and basketball players.

Resolutions for 2007

I’ll admit it. I’m a New Year resolver. I make a few New Year resolutions and am stubborn enough to keep most of them through most of the year. If the alcohol and drug abuse field were to make resolutions for 2007 these are the resolutions I believe we ought to make as a field.

This column continues to summarize the results of the new book, Rethinking Substance Abuse: What the Science Shows, and What We Should Do About It (Miller & Carroll, 2006). The book brought together some of the best addiction minds in the country to discuss the best addiction research, and issued recommendations for the addiction field.
