Counselor: The Magazine for Addiction Professionals publishes original work, expressing fresh ideas and up-to-date information concerning addiction, behavioral health, and mental health.

Image Counselor's Mission: To provide addiction, behavioral health, and mental health professionals with authoritative, current information that can be applied in everyday practice.

In keeping with this mission, Counselor seeks expertly written, authoritative articles composed in language that is easy to understand and appealing to professionals working at any level.

You can get a "writer's feel" for Counselor's tone — conversational without being overly academic. To familiarize yourself with the style and content of the magazine, see the archives section.

Readership includes addiction professionals, mental health counselors and therapists, clinical supervisors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, prevention specialists, hospital administrators and treatment center staff, program directors, educators, and juvenile justice and criminal justice personnel.

Please DO NOT submit:

  • Feature articles written using the first person "I"
  • Recycled term papers
  • Previously published articles
  • Academic, scientific, or theoretical dissertations
  • Articles lacking proper citation and references (Chicago/APA Style preferred)


Editorial content areas open to outside submissions include:

  • Feature articles: Approximately 2,500-3,000 words with proper citations within the text and matching list of references at the end of the article. Chicago/APA style preferred.
  • Alternative Therapies: Approximately 750-1,000 word profile of a proven addiction treatment therapy that exists on the edge of mainstream treatment.
  • Assessment Tools: Questionnaires and other client assessment guidelines for clinical use.
  • Ethics: Approximately 750-1,000 article highlighting an ethical quandary for addiction professionals and describing ethical approaches to that quandary.
  • First Person: Approximately 750-1,000 word article written in the first person about a personal experience that has affected you as a counseling professional, i.e., personal battle with addiction, problem, success, loss, etc.
  • Letters to the Editor: 300 words and under pertaining to an article appearing within the last six months of most recent issue. Letters submitted longer than 300 words will be edited before publication.
  • Media Review: Approximately 750-800 word review of addictions-related literature, video, CD, or tape.
  • On the Web: Approximately 750-1,000 word article on technology issues that can improve the quality of care counselors provide to clients.
  • Opinion: An essay of approximately 850 words written in the first person that states and supports an opinion related to an addictions/mental health topic.
  • Prevention: Approximately 750-1,000 word article on cutting-edge prevention efforts and approaches.

Submission guidelines

All articles submitted to Counselor must adhere to the following criteria:

  • Submitted via e-mail as a word for PC attachment (.doc) to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
  • No more than 3,000 words in length for features; no more than 1,000 words for columns/departments, no more than 800 words for media reviews and opinion pieces; and no more than 300 words for letters to the editor.
  • Be well-researched and include multi-source reference list with corresponding Chicago/APA citation within the text.   • Refrain from the use of first person (“I”) in all articles, except in the columns where it is deemed appropriate.
  • Graphics: no digital images allowed. Please submit original photograph. All bars/charts submitted will be re-created to match the style of the magazine.

Unsolicited manuscripts, query letters, and proposals are welcome. If you would like a response or return, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage. Expect 6 to 8 weeks for a response. Payment for articles is in copies of Counselor Magazine only.
