Client Satisfaction with Therapy Interview (CSTI)
Columns - Assessment Tools
Thursday, 31 March 2005

The following brief open-ended interview contains 20 questions designed to assess client satisfaction with various aspects of the therapeutic experience once therapy has terminated. The CSTI can be administered orally during an interview or over the telephone. It can also be administered in written form, although its length might inhibit some clients from providing complete answers. The CSTI addresses issues such as services, costs, privacy and confidentiality, evaluation, professional behavior, therapeutic interventions, and therapeutic outcomes.

Information generated from the CSTI is qualitative in nature and no statistical statements can be made about the results. However, the interview can yield useful information about how satisfied clients are with therapeutic services provided in many settings, including private practice. Accordingly, the interview can be administered shortly after therapy has terminated or sometime after the fact, ranging from 3 to 12 months.

Counselors can benefit from reviewing client responses to identify areas of strength they can continue to emphasize with clients and/or weaknesses that can be improved with new and/or returning clients. Some questions may not pertain to a given client; therefore, please tailor the interview to the client by simply skipping items that are not relevant.
