GRIEF AND RECOVERY APPRAISAL TECHNIQUE (GRAT
Columns - Assessment Tools
Saturday, 30 November 2002

The following sentence completion technique is a semi-projective task that taps into clients' experience of three domains that relate to grief, recovery, and spirituality. The GRAT can be administered verbally or in written form to clients, who complete the stem with their own responses. The GRAT is designed to capture underlying areas of concerns that clients may experience when dealing with grief and loss during recovery.

R Recovery: issues associated with threats to recovery, coping skills, personal change [8 items]
G Grief: issues associated with grief and loss and concomitant emotions including depression,
anger, and guilt [7 items]
S Spirituality: issues associated with the spiritual domain and its relationship to dealing with grief,
loss, recovery, and healing [5 items]

It is hoped this instrument will provide counselors with a more comprehensive perspective on issues clients grapple with during recovery. No clinical decisions should be made on the basis of the GRAT or any other single instrument. The GRAT is intended only to provide supplemental information that may used in practice.
