Dear Readers,

The lazy days of summer are finally here — maybe not so lazy for some of us. At Counselor Magazine, we continue to grow and evolve to serve the needs of addiction counselors everywhere.

It is with great pleasure that I announce an important acquisition by Counselor Magazine's parent company, Health Communications, Inc. (HCI). The company  recently acquired The Institute for Integral Development, which has offered high quality professional training experiences for addiction professionals for more than 30 years. This is great news for addiction counselors everywhere. U.S. Journal Training, Inc. and the Institute for Integral Development will host nine conferences across the country in 2008, each of which will offer continuing education credits in a wide variety of addiction- and mental health-related disciplines. For more details, please see p. 61.

Also, you will notice enhancements to our magazine as we strive to present the very latest and most important information to you in a format that is both easy to digest and pleasant to look at. I hope you find these changes to both our magazine and the website to your liking, and I welcome your comments and criticisms.

Speaking of comments, I am sure our lead article this month will invite some discussion and debate among those working in the addiction field. Never before has there been such an in-depth review on this hot-button topic, and Counselor Magazine is honored to present this hard-hitting look at the use of confrontational treatment for addictions.

In their article, "The Use of Confrontation in Addiction Treatment — History, Science and Time for Change," authors William L. White, MA and William R. Miller, PhD closely review the roots of the confrontational treatment movement, and explore relevant scientific evidence on the effect of these methods for treating addiction. The authors also offer summary conclusions and recommendations for treatment in the 21st century. The authors and Counselor Magazine welcome and encourage your comments on this article, as it is always an insightful and educational experience for addiction counselors to share their thoughts and ideas.

Our next article discusses the daunting challenge of treating clients for chronic pain while managing the risks associated with long-term use of opioids — the drugs most commonly used to manage chronic pain. In his article, "Chronic Pain, Opioids and Addiction: Challenges and Controversies," Mel Pohl, MD, FASAM, discusses the two types of pain and offers therapeutic alternatives for treating chronic pain.

For those of you who are interested in learning more about treating chronic pain and addiction, Dr. Pohl will be among the featured speakers at U.S. Journal Training's 13th Annual Counseling Skills Conference, which is being held Sept. 27-29, 2007, at the Las Vegas Hilton.

Turning to a very different topic, author Robert Weiss, LCSW, CAS, provides us with important information on assessing and treating sex addiction, particularly those who are fueling their addiction by indulging in Internet pornography. In his article, "Untangling the Web: Understanding Sexual Addiction in the Internet Age," Weiss provides an overview of the sex addict, and offers tips for counselors on how to offer the best treatment to sex addicts and their spouses.

Too often, both addicts and their families fall victim to the ravages of addiction. In his article, "Family-Focused Interventions — Saving One Family at a Time from Addiction," author Andrew T. Wainwright explains how interventionists are working for the families of addicted persons. In addition, he provides a detailed account of what an intervention entails for the interventionist, the addict and the family.
