What is Recovery?

An essay on the subject of “What is Recovery” raises, for me, the question of what is Addiction. Since everyone of us has an idea, our own idea, of what Addiction is, we'll also have our own answer to “What is Recovery?”

Since we don’t have agreement in our field on what Addiction is, I doubt that we can come up with an easy agreement on what recovery is. I could just tell you my definition of both but my goal is not for us to have a debate over which we can come to a resolution. My goal is that we all look at ourselves and how we got to this question. It may be, that after examining ourselves, we may choose to change the question we ask.

“I became insane with long intervals of horrible sanity.” — Edgar Allan Poe

I always thought my bouts of depression were situational. Reflecting on those dark and emotionally painful periods, I realized my depression oftentimes seemed triggered by financial hardships. There was the time I was ordered to pay $10,000 in additional child support; or when I had to refinance my condominium; and the multiple times I overspent at Christmas or during summer vacations. A gorilla on my professional side, a 98-pound weakling in my spiritual development....

In contrast to my blue periods were those delightful moments of incredible energy and creativity. What I thought were “natural highs” attributable to being engaged and excited about life made no task or project too difficult. I was proud to be the father of an anti-drunk driving program, which no doubt saved lives and became the most successful public affairs program in the history of my Fortune 500 employer.

When management dragged their feet on approving the pilot donation of video cameras to the Houston Police Department, I still managed to conduct the first news conference involving Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the chief of police and our local company official with just two week’s lead time. Didn’t I successfully juggle my full-time graduate studies with my communication consulting work to pay the bills and child support while achieving a 4.0 grade point average my first semester? Had I not overcome the emotional scars of my youth and the trauma of divorce to become a loving, caring and involved father to my children?
