What is Recovery?

An essay on the subject of “What is Recovery” raises, for me, the question of what is Addiction. Since everyone of us has an idea, our own idea, of what Addiction is, we'll also have our own answer to “What is Recovery?”

Since we don’t have agreement in our field on what Addiction is, I doubt that we can come up with an easy agreement on what recovery is. I could just tell you my definition of both but my goal is not for us to have a debate over which we can come to a resolution. My goal is that we all look at ourselves and how we got to this question. It may be, that after examining ourselves, we may choose to change the question we ask.

In July, the popular social networking site, MySpace, deleted 29,000 convicted sex offenders from its service. Just two months earlier, they deleted 7,000 offenders. The minimum age to register for a page on MySpace is 14. Why would sex offenders register to participate in a social networking site?
The Internet can be a scary place filled with monsters eager to prey on the unsuspecting. Reveal too much about yourself and you may end up being stalked, or even worse. In a recent article, the author wrote, “Anybody could be tracking your children online. Even me” (Flanagan, 2007). She starts at the now infamous website, MySpace, with a young teen living nearby. Through the course of the article she manages to track the teen to a degree that should be frightening to parents.

Twenty years ago, you would be hard pressed as an individual to meet even a small number of sex offenders. Now, a quick jump into cyberspace lets me rub virtual shoulders with them and conversely, they can rub shoulders with me.

Google yourself. Type your name into an Internet search engine and take a look at the resulting entries. A search for my name yields a real estate agent in New Zealand and a prospective NBA player from Clemson University. Alas, fame has not come my way.
