I suppose the members of each generation reach an age where they come
to the conclusion that the world has changed dramatically within the
brief number of years since their birth. The changes seem to present
themselves overnight, typically as some new technology is finally
embraced by an ecstatic public that never previously recognized the
possibilities.
The Internet and email existed for several decades, but it took the availability of inexpensive personal computers, the development of the web, the implementation of broadband access, and the publicity of the dot-com era to bring the potential of the medium to life. In a matter of weeks, it seemed, everyone had business cards with their email address featured. Businesses were not real unless they had a website, and around-the-clock availability of everyone was assumed, via instant messaging. Here it is, 11p.m. on a Wednesday night, and if I want to order a new book, clothing, or even food to be delivered to my home tomorrow, I can do so. Sometimes I find it hard to imagine that just a decade ago, it was difficult to locate song lyrics or to find a store that sold a particular item that held little interest for most people, or to determine how many rehabilitation centers there are within 25 miles of Philadelphia. Now, just a few clicks of the mouse can answer these and many other questions. The novelty has passed and the utility is now taking center stage. But as a novel interface becomes utilitarian, it also becomes familiar. To that extent, the need for a regular column focusing on the particular medium of the web — something that was vitally important in 2001 when we launched this series — is now behind us.
