The Initial Direction Questionnaire (IDQ) is designed to assist in identifying a recovery program that is most similar to a client’s current belief system, the hypothesis being: if an instrument can assist in initially guiding a client to a recovery orientation that is most similar to their current belief system, the client can more readily engage recovery. In 1999, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) released Principles of Drug Addiction Treatment: A Research-Based Guide. NIDA listed as its number one principle for treatment: “No single treatment is appropriate for all individuals.” In 1997, the National Treatment Center published a report indicating that 93 percent of the 400 privately funded inpatient and outpatient treatment programs surveyed were based on the 12-Steps, and of these, 83 percent hold Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings on site. These findings illustrate the disparity between research-based practices and treatment services that are currently available. There have been numerous reports and published research that have repeatedly encouraged diversity in recovery orientation. In 1990, the National Academy of Science published a report, Broadening the Base of Treatment for Alcohol Problems. The major conclusion from the 600-page report was that treatment of drinking problems needs to be diversified. In 1997, Project MATCH published its massive research effort, Matching Alcoholism Treatments to Client Heterogeneity: Project MATCH Post-treatment Drinking Outcomes. Want to read the entire article?
