What is Recovery?

An essay on the subject of “What is Recovery” raises, for me, the question of what is Addiction. Since everyone of us has an idea, our own idea, of what Addiction is, we'll also have our own answer to “What is Recovery?”

Since we don’t have agreement in our field on what Addiction is, I doubt that we can come up with an easy agreement on what recovery is. I could just tell you my definition of both but my goal is not for us to have a debate over which we can come to a resolution. My goal is that we all look at ourselves and how we got to this question. It may be, that after examining ourselves, we may choose to change the question we ask.

SAMHSA Head Leaves Post for Iraq
Written by Theresa Dattolico
Friday, 25 July 2008

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Mike Leavitt recently announced that Terry Cline, PhD, will become the Department’s next Health Attache, representing the U.S. at its embassy in Iraq.

Effective Aug. 30, Dr. Cline will leave his post as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Administrator to coordinate HHS programs in Iraq and provide advice to the U.S. Ambassador, HHS Secretary and others. He also will serve as liaison to Iraq’s Ministries of Health, Higher Education and Social Affairs, and will work closely with international organizations, private partners and U.S. government agencies on health-related activities. RADM Eric Broderick, DDS, SAMHSA’s Deputy Administrator, will step in as SAMHSA’s Acting Administrator.

“Terry’s experiences as a caregiver, manager of State-level health systems and builder of strong collaborative relationships make him an excellent choice to help the U.S. government advise Iraq as it rebuilds its health care system,” Secretary Leavitt said. “I appreciate Terry’s commitment to improving health care globally, and welcome him to this important new role.”
