The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) of New Jersey has recently re-launched and upgraded its web tool that helps people find the correct type of program at www.helptool.org The web tool is based off their helpline and is a questionnaire that helps answer some of the questions people may have about the type of program appropriate for them, insurance or simply where to start. The Self-Administered Screening Tool from the NCADD offers a short number of questions and, after completion, will provide two local treatment providers in Middlesex, New Jersey and the surrounding area. The criterion for placement suggestions comes from the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Patient Placement Criteria. It is important to note that this tool is not used to diagnose substance abuse problems. The patient must contact the chosen provider to arrange for a complete assessment to make sure that the placement is an appropriate one, since this tool is a guide and not a replacement for professional assessments. The tool is also available at the NCADD website, www.ncadd-middlesex.org ; just click on the “Get Help” button to reach the assessment. It is still an option to speak to an addiction professional by calling the NCADD hotline at 732-254-3344. The Self-Administered Screening Tool was developed in conjunction with Mindcross Training and an e-Learning initiative is also being launched that will provide educators and addiction professionals access to training that is beyond the traditional classroom.
