The holiday season is a stressful time for everyone. It is important for caregivers to take care of themselves during this time to best serve their stressed clients. The client feels these added stressors and it may threaten their recovery, so it is important for the professionals to be able to provide the same level of care they do the rest of the year, and practice certain techniques to aid in the reduction of stress in their own lives. Here are some techniques for self-care this holiday season:

Relax by taking small breaks throughout the day in which you find a comfortable spot. While there, take deep breaths and exhale slowly. Take some meditative time to relax.

Make sure you get enough rest.

Reach acceptance by not allowing yourself to get stressed over things you have no control over.

Talk rationally to yourself during a stressful situation. If the problem is not yours, let it go. If it is, react calmly, give yourself a break, avoid perfectionism, and plan how to handle the situation next time.

Get organized by setting a realistic schedule and sticking to it. Make sure to include down time and time with friends and family to maintain a healthy balance.

Exercise as a means to stay healthy and to de-stress yourself.

Reduce time urgency by planning ahead and slowing things down. This can help keep you from running late, which can be stressful. Also, do not put more on your plate than you can handle.

Allow yourself to have some quiet time alone.

Be careful of your eating habits. Just because fast food is fast does not mean you should gravitate towards it more just because you are stressed. Maintaining a healthy balanced diet can keep you energized and feeling good.

Talk to your friends and family because it helps relieve stress by being social and sharing problems.

Lastly, do not feel selfish for taking time for yourself. It is very important to practice self-care. You must be in a good place to help others reach their own healthy place.
