Karl Bardosh, Professor at NYU Tish School of Film and Television and award-winning film maker has just completed an 80 minute docu feature on the play Visions. This play on addiction outreach as reached more than 30,000 people in shelters, treatment centers, prisons, and communities. There is also a group of volunteers 400 strong that do not use last names, do not want any media attention, and work for free, who help spread the messages in Visions. The group who performs the play was given the Presidential Points of Light award for community service and volunteerism. This inspirational play points the way to hope and recovery and is intended to bring addiction to the forefront, therefore breaking the denial that many face about addiction. Visions depicts people at their lowest point, or “bottom” from substance abuse and shows how the “awakening” process occurs. It then follows them through treatment and the Twelve Step program. The troupe performs in the places hardest hit: rehabilitation centers, hospitals, shelters, youth houses and correction centers. They perform to crowds who are suffering from addiction themselves or those who help people or know someone who suffers from substance abuse. The play instills a renewed sense of hope to the viewers, even causing some to weep in happiness. The performances are usually closed to protect the anonymity of the clients. If the clients do not have an adequate facility, the crew of Visions will bus the clients to the location and will provide them a night of theatre and snacks for free. The play is also shown in risk areas where prevention is important. There is usually no fee to see the play, but when there is, or when donations are made, the money either goes to charities or to fund the play performance for other groups. The group was made into a not-for-profit organization in 1993 to bring substance abuse prevention and recovery education to those in need. Visions began in 1991 in the mind of Bob L., the author, producer and director of the play. He penned the play during his short breaks while working at an automotive plant. Soon, he was able to bring his message of hope to those in the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. The inaugural performance of Visions came after Bob L. found his cast and finally, after many rejections, found a place to rehearse. It was performed at Integrity House at Meadowview Hospital, a treatment facility for those suffering from substance abuse in Secaucus, New Jersey. The Visions cast and crew have been performing ever since and are the recipients of the State of New Jersey Governor’s Volunteer Award in the Arts and Humanities.
