A study conducted by researchers at Tel Aviv University in Israel has found that a specific component of marijuana can help the healing of broken bones (Gross, 2015).

The researchers found that giving cannabidiol (CBD) to “rats with mid-femoral fractures” enhanced the healing process (Wilkerson, 2015). In fact, the CBD not only helped mend the fractures, it actually strengthened bones in the process, making them harder to break in the future. Interestingly, the CBD worked even when separated from THC, the part of marijuana that makes people feel “high.”

According to Dr. Yankel Gabet, from Tel Aviv University’s Bone Research Lab, “the clinical potential of cannabinoid-related compounds is simply undeniable at this point” and “CBD, the principal agent in our study, is primarily anti-inflammatory and has no psychoactivity” (Wilkerson, 2015). Dr. Gabet also mentioned that the findings from this study could eventually affect research for osteoporosis and skeletal diseases.
