New Laws against Making Meth and Drugged Driving in Michigan

blog
Michigan has recently passed new statutes against home meth labs and drugged driving aimed at addressing the state’s drug problem. The state’s growing meth problem prompted this step towards creating a first-line defense against repeat offenders.

The new law criminalizes the purchase of over-the-counter cough and cold medication with the intention of creating crystal meth. Pharmacists would act as a warning for law enforcement because they would be alerted when customers who were previously convicted of meth-related crimes try to purchase drug ingredients.

Another piece of legislation will “give police greater leeway to check suspected drivers who may be operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol” (Lavitt, 2015).
