Federal Government to Review Marijuana Classification

Share
blog
For the first time in many decades, the federal government will be reconsidering marijuana’s classification as a Schedule I drug.

Towards the end of last year, Judge Kimberly J. Mueller “agreed to hold a fact-finding hearing on the constitutionality of the 1970 Controlled Substances Act,” which is what classifies marijuana under Schedule I (McCluskey, 2015). This hearing is to be held sometime in 2015.

Prosecutors have said that the decision to make marijuana a Schedule I drug was based on the notion that it had no medicinal qualities—an issue that many citizens and the defense attorneys are arguing against.
